The Beauty of Vermeil, by Stephanie Occhipinti

Understanding what vermeil is and how to pronounce it is quite easy. It’s pronounced “ver-may.” This age-old technique that’s been around for centuries has been improved upon and is still highly desired. The gold is about a 50% thicker layer than regular plating and is always over sterling silver. Being nickel-free, gold vermeil is ideal for a wearer with allergies.

Although this method is pricy, the beauty of vermeil is a handcrafted piece of jewelry that is more affordable than one in all gold, while having a comparable look. I love the idea of customizing a brighter tone and karat color for my pieces, creating an uplifting and chic expression. The color will naturally darken over time, which I find lovely. Designing fine jewelry for thirty years led me to create my collections in gold vermeil over silver to be more attainable, and allow more people to own and enjoy them for years to come.

Simple care tips for longevity are, avoid swimming, perfumes, hairspray, creams and exercising while wearing it. Do all that before you slip it on. Because it is plated with gold, you only want to gently polish with a 100% cotton cloth and it’s best to store it in the airtight plastic baggie it came in.

Hi…I am searching for the opposite situation. I WANT to darken my vermeil to get an old looking patina to it. Will the hard boiled egg trick work?
